According to W3Techs, WordPress powers 40% of all the websites on the Internet, including those without a content management system (CMS) or with a custom-coded CMS. Or to put it another way, WordPress powers over one-third of the web!

However, it is important to note that 50.2% of the world’s websites do not run a content management system, but for websites who do, WordPress has garnered over 60% share which is a far cry from what Joomla, another content management system, and the second most popular CMS has:

In my opinion, WordPress’ success as the CMS of choice for popular platforms and brands could be tied to its simplicity, especially when compared to other CMSs. Another important factor is the fact that it is open-sourced (more themes and plugins thanks to this) and free of charge.
